  • Decide what type of animal you want.
    Animal shelters usually only offer cats, kittens, dogs, and puppies. Their supply of animals is often made up of ones that were abuses, neglects, or abandoned. Most rescues require you to spend time with the animal before adopting it to make sure it will be a good fit. When considering the type of animal you want, think about not only species, but age and breed. Puppies and kittens are cute, but older animals need a loving home too.

  • Check your finances to make sure you can afford a pet.
    Having a pet is a huge monetary responsibility. You have to pay for food as well as regular and unexpected vet appointments. You will also need to budget for flea and tick medication, collars, vaccinations, and more. If you are not willing to spend the money, adopting a pet is not a good option for you.

  • Prepare your home for its arrival.
    Before picking up your pet from the shelter, you need to get everything you need to be prepared. Purchase food and water bowls. Find a place that is easy for the animal to get to, but out of the way enough that you won’t be constantly knocking them over. You also need to choose a place for them to sleep. Other optional preparations include joining a doggy park, installing a doggy door, and deciding if you want a indoor or outdoor cat.
